The way to do it:

<blockquote>> Re: one in the eye for bike theives
> Author: <a href="http ://www.singletrackworld.com/user.php?op=userinfo&uname=lardman" rel="nofollow" rel="nofollow">lardman</a>
> Date: 15/02/07 18:08
>
> many years ago I was a bike messenger in San Fransisco, and i caught someone riding off on my bike, and gave chase. I caught them when the chain came off (because they dont know how to shift properly) and they went over the bars. he waS a bit stunned when i got to him, and i proceded to lock him to a parkin meter by the neck with my D-lock. Its a perfect fit, goes right round the neck, and wont come off over the head. It was a bit of struggle, but i'm a big bast*rd and he quickly gave in to my headlock.
>
> I then got on my radio, and called up some other messengers who swung on by, and proceeded to generally abuse this bloke. Pissing on him was how it started, but by the end he had a few nasty looking bruses, and a mouth full of messenger-poo.
>
> We took $300 out of his pocket, and stripped him naked leaving him in a rather unfortunate area of the city to be left naked and alone at night.
>
> best day of the year that one for me.</blockquote>

Possibly a bit extreme, but is the thief going to do it again?

Perhaps if we, on apprehension of one of said 'miscreants', were allowed by law to remove something of theirs (A kidney perhaps?) which we could then sell on, thereby recouping the cost of our losses..? No?

What a perfect thing to Put On The Fence ( http://whatshouldiputonthefence.com/ )! "Bicycle thieves found chained to these railings will be removed without further notice." Actually, if there are enough of you, you were never there, you don't know what he's talking about, and you certainly don't have time to be locking random youths to railings - you've got work to do, paperwork up to the clavicles, etc. It would be nice if you never had another such opportunity, but you probably will, and some sort of example needs to be made. Cheers.
