fixie

That is us. And we don’t mind; if tomorrow the Coolest-hunter of the lot, after having his Swift stolen, declares that saddle-less is better, you will soon see half of Hackney with sore bums.

Seriously, Londoners may want to be inspired by the dominant performance of Hoy & Co., but please don’t ride in town like one of those super(wo)men, as the BBC tries to encourage. As one commenter wisely says:

I cannot see the connection. It’s like looking for what formula 1 can do to assist the regular motorist. Cycling as a commuter activity would fare much better if we stopped trying to connect it to sport and sporty types. In the Netherlands cycling is a normal activity for normal people and lots more of them get on their bikes.

Here is an example of what London does not need, from a fixies forum:

essex road, midday saturday.
car pulls infront of me from the right, trying to park or something, i was proper pushing it, having just watched a morning of olympic track cycling and being slightly late for work. i pull on the front brake to avoid collision, the brake completely locks up on me, i go straight out the front door. obviously very annoyed with the driver, give her a good lung full. she comes out, apologies and that crap and get ready to go one my way, fairly grazed and bruised but none too bitter. but then i noticed this, [picture of cracked frame] …

Image above by FaceHunter. The Danes can do fixies with real style, no turned up jeans here; but does he have a saddle ;-) ?

[...] Racing Not For the City Jump to Comments In a welcome return to form, Andrea at Velorution has brought this horrible article from the BBC to my [...]

  1. No turned up jeans on the Dane, but he’s still in the skinny leg pants that fixie riders here in the USA seem to favor.

    That BBC article — wow.

  2. anyone who has cycled the morning commute on the cycle paths of Copenhagen or Berlin, will know that it’s more cut throat than the M25 on a bank Holiday monday. (and there are lots of skinny jeans and one leg turn-ups)

  3. LOL. It's an old bike so I guess it will blend in.

  4. ‘i pull on the front brake to avoid collision’…

Maybe, just maybe, having two brakes and using them both would have stopped a collision; fixie-smug-righteous-type from cracking a frame and driver from having (presumably) a cyclist shaped dent in her door. Bicycles are on the whole a triumph of function over form, shame a few of their riders aren’t ;)

…Rare I’m on the side of a motorist.
