Ties Carlier runs the Strida distribution in the Netherlands. He also designs bikes. Here is his latest project, in collaboration with Sjoerd Smit: the Moof, an urban single-speed with anti-theft lights incorporated in the frame. But how does one change the batteries, you may ask? One doesn’t, because the lights are solar powered. Not shown is an innovative integral locking mechanism.
We will have a test bike in our store from early February and they will be available for sale from mid March. Price: €4-500.
That's funny. I saw one of these, maybe an early production sample, parked around the corner from my house a few days ago. It looked brand new. The one thing I couldn't figure out was where the light switch was or how one would access the batteries. The solar power partially explains that.
It was an attractive bike with a nicely welded aluminium frame, though the somewhat cheap Chinese parts and tires were a letdown. The frame of the imitation Brooks leather saddle had already broken too.
Minimilatist beuaty but where do you put your panniers without ruining the look
Imitation Brooks? Not even a Lepper? That's bad.

Definitely imitation Brooks, though I don't remember their name. We met the manufacturer of these saddles at Eurobike this year. When we asked what styles they offered and what the options were for OEM, the salesman simply handed me the current Brooks catalog and said “which one you want?”. Really.
We'd happily specify less luxurious and pricey leather saddles on our utility bikes if they were tough and comfortable. But the cheaper leather saddles we've seen so far have just been poor quality Brooks ripoffs, so we'll just have to live with Brooks fashioning themselves into a “luxury brand”. Yuck.
It looks quite cool, but can I vote against the solar powered rechargeable battery lights ? The problem is that batteries contain nasty chemicals and use a lot of energy in their production. They also have a very limited life, and don't much like extremes of temperature. So if you store your bike outside in winter the lights probably won't work anyway. (Hub) dynamo powered lights would seem rather more useful to me.
Looks a nice bike but if you wanted to use it here in Wales you would need to fit front brakes and put a few more gears on it for sure!!
I was wondering where does Ties Carlier hide the solar panels?I cannot see it from the bike.
The transparent solar panels are on the lenses of the lights.
I have a solar powered light for my beach cruiser, I never have worry about batteries.
Where is the solar panel for the light located ?
This is awesome. Atleast solar power gets to be used to deter bicycle thieves. even if not a big fit, it shows designers are always thinking of news ways to make everything green and clean.
The Moof is on sale in Milan for 390 euros, single frame size, 28″ wheels, single speed, coaster rear brake. They say a 26'' wheel version will be available in August. But why oh why is there no front brake ?
