City Cycling

… I would make sure this guy never drives again:

Watch how the driver tries to overtake at speed a group of cyclists around a bend on a narrow road: he speeds over some bumps: this causes the rear doors to open and one catches a parked car dragging it along for about 10 meters, narrowly missing the cyclists, one of whom happened to be Boris Johnson.

This is what I would do:
1. Tag the driver and tell him: your banned from driving in London. For. Ever.
2. Send an email to all companies who employ lorry drivers, and tell them: “Drive like this and we will impound your fleet”

What is the point of having power, if you don’t use it?

UPDATE: As we sadly have to report the killing of another beautiful lady in London by a lorry driver, this time in a hit-and-run incident, I would immediately fire the Head of Transport at Greenwich Council. The problem for Boris is that he has slashed the money allocated to London Councils to improve the safety of vulnerable road users. Let’s hope that the above scare makes him rethink.

  1. That story about the young woman is sad and scary. The comments from readers of the story is comforting, though. If the same article ran in Chicago's paper, the comments would be filled with crazy people ranting about how cyclists are a menace and should stay off the road.

  2. Sadly these things are the inevitable result of the way that Britain's towns are planned. Conflict is built into the design, it's inevitable that with a lack of patience this sort of things happens.

It's not impossible to change. It happened here and the result is far fewer cyclists being injured or killed.

  3. If Boris & Co had been taking the primary position, the cretin couldn't have endangered them in that way. Instead he plans to confine cyclists to ghetto cycle lanes at the side of the road, to facilitate exactly the kind of idiocy he so narrowly escaped.

  5. Why is it that ordinary members of the public seem happy to rant about cyclists who (almost never) hurt anyone, but lorry drivers seem to be immune? Just last week I saw the driver of an enormous articulated lorry performing a u-turn at a mini roundabout whilst on his mobile phone!!!! Lorry drivers on mobiles should lose their HGV licenses immediately.

  6. Perhaps monies could be diverted from other city budget items such as fire protection and reallocated to elephants. Perhaps additional taxes could be levied.

  7. Careless driver are the primary cause of road accidents, according to some police reports sometimes the drivers are to sleepy, drunk or overtake at a high speed that's why accidents occur.

  8. Driving should be with precautions. Young generation drives so harsh, they are so prone to accidents.
