Is there a more repugnant sign of London’s authorities disdain and ignorance towards cyclists, than the ‘Cyclists Dismount’ sign?

dismount

Here is one in Camden. Roadworks are taking place on the two-way cycle lane. David Hembrow has repeatedly shown what the Dutch would do. Here, the Camden idiots just plonk the disrespectful sign. Please note that the rest of the road is one-way opposite to the direction of the picture. Imagine a mother with a child in the back approaching this obstacle. What is she supposed to do?

So please, whenever you see one of these signs, do one of the following:

1. Destroy, destroy, destroy
2. Remove it and reposition it in front of the relevant Councillor’s door.

Our feet are not razor-sharp, so we opted for option two.

When London cyclists learn to stop at zebra crossings and (God forbid) red lights, you might have the higher moral ground that would allow you to incite the destruction of public property.

  1. Orestes, in London it is statistically safer to ride through a red light than stopping at one.
I agree with you however that cyclists should show much more deference towards pedestrians.

  2. Please don't lump 'London Cyclists' into some kind of stereotypical group. Only some cyclists behave in the manner you have described, not all. Just as SOME motorists drive too close to cyclists and don't use their mirrors, and just as SOME pedestrians don't even look when crossing a road and nearly get hit by cyclists.

I've had to negotiate this very obstacle and it's a complete nightmare – cyclists are put in a very dangerous position. We shouldn't have to dismount. Roadworks never ask motorists to get out of their cars and walk do they? :)

  3. What happened next? Well done you for making a stand and doing something about the problem. Perhaps if enough people do similar we'll see a difference…
