City Cycling

You can clearly see the frown in the forehead and the fear in the eyes, just before approaching the junction.
The neck is crooked and stretched and the person is thinking “Is it safe?”

The above is a driver in Denmark, just before making a right turn (the equivalent of a British left turn). The driver knows that if she makes a mistake and mistimes the turn or underestimates the speed of an approaching pair of cyclists, she will be in big trouble. If she has a fellow passenger, he will also be crooking his neck to check the cycle lane they need to cross.

Contrast this with London where uncivilised drivers of motor vehicles, large and small, turn left with total disregard for cyclists riding on their left. And they have the arrogance of hooting at pedestrians crossing the street.

In this respect London is truly a Third World City, competing with places such as Moscow, Lagos, Cairo, Bombay for uncivilised behaviour. Until Londoners start to act as North Europeans and show respect for pedestrians and cyclists, London will never be a great cycling city.
