Bob Davis criticises us for our uncouth use of expletives directed to Boris. However, after reading Bob’s latest excellent piece, which exposes the truth about the underfunding of cycling facilities in London, how can one not feel repulsion for this Administration? Bob shows that 85% of the cycling budget is spent on “flagship projects” either shoddily made or with minimal benefits, leaving only £17m for work that can make a difference to everyday cyclists (less than £3/Londoner, the price of a Tube ticket). He adds:
It also seems to have been forgotten that Mayor Johnson’s major contribution to funding was to eliminate ring fenced spending on cycling. In the name of giving the boroughs freedom, they are now in a position to not spend money on supporting cycling, and can indeed create more hostile environments for cycling.
This propensity to spend on white or blue elephants, and disregard investment on making the everyday more pleasant, is not of course confined to Boris: it is a malaise affecting the majority of the political class: spending money is easy; making real change through multiple small interventions, which don’t grab headlines, takes courage.
What feels like betrayal is this boneless performance by someone who boasts about his bravado and his desire to make his preferred means of transport safer and more pleasant.
In the video above gaz545 shows how many hooligans there are on London roads; the result of decades of politicians without cojones.
