Since January this year, the Brompton S Bag has featured a removable flap, affixed by Velcro; here are the first two designs: Hose Flap – £45 Made exclusively for Brompton by Elvis & Kresse, this product is part of their pioneering fire hose range, made from salvaged, decommissioned fire hoses that have been fighting fires for up to 30 years. From a feature on Will Butler-Adams, CEO of Brompton Bikes in Fast Company: Before Will runs me round the factory, he leads me to their R&D department–or, rather, a tiny passage leading into the factory’s yard. Parked up there is a black Brompton with a matt metal box attached to the left handlebar. It’s a battery. On the right handlebar is what looks like a plastic sleeve with three LED-illuminated settings. “Try that for size,” says Will. “Crank your right hand and see what happens.” I [...]

This year’s Tour climbs the Tourmalet twice. Alas no Alpe d’Huez. To obviate this black hole, we are stocking the splendid Brooks Team Pro Special Edition Alpe d’Huez, £120. Alpe d’Huez is one of the main climbs and has been a stage finish in the Tour de France almost every year since 1976. The first was in 1952, won by Fausto Coppi, at a time when most cyclists were riding Brooks Saddles. The pattern of the Alpe d’Huez impressed on this saddle has been designed by Dan Funderburgh, [...]
Q & A at TED: Now, you have apparently become one of the biggest champions of cycling … First, I’m not a sports cyclist. I’m no Lance Armstrong, but I do use a bike to get from place to place in Manhattan, a little bit of Brooklyn. I use it to get to work, that kind of thing. And I’ve done so for two, almost three decades now. I never proselytized it or told my friends, “Hey, you should do this.” But, lately, in the last [...]

Bob Davis criticises us for our uncouth use of expletives directed to Boris. However, after reading Bob’s latest excellent piece, which exposes the truth about the underfunding of cycling facilities in London, how can one not feel repulsion for this Administration? Bob shows that 85% of the cycling budget is spent on “flagship projects” either shoddily made or with minimal benefits, leaving only £17m for work that can make a difference to everyday cyclists (less than £3/Londoner, the price of a Tube ticket). He adds: It [...]

How To Guides
Adam Salmon has recently fitted a 3-speed fixed wheel hub on his Kogswell. Here is his report: Only been using this a week and it is just so much fun, it’s been a long time since a new bike put as bigger smile on my face as the Kogswell I built up using one of these. Can’t find a bad word to say about it. The hub does have just a little backlash, enough that you can feel it, but nothing to worry about. Not sure I’d [...]

Recently, cycling up Westminster Bridge, next to my girlfriend, who gets easily scared off the safe position by large vehicles, I was subjected to the worst of British attitudes to cycling: A bus driver hooted at me and proceeded to drive 30cm near me; Another cyclist (naturally wearing a stupid helmet and yellow gears) overtook me and shouted: “Why don’t you ride on the left?” and proceeded by hugging the kerb. What is wrong with this nation, so masochistically happy to be butchered by bus and lorry drivers? Just [...]
