NOTE
Delivery times: 4 weeks for steel frames; 12-15 weeks for superlight frames

The Brompton is a bike which rides superbly, is safe, agile and fast, yet folds easily and quickly into a highly-compact and portable package.

Another fun aspect of the Brompton is the myriad opportunities to make the bike your own. Use the tools above to experiment with colour, changing the main frame and extremities colour to get a a virtual look at your future bike.

Finely-engineered and elegant, the Brompton has a full-sized frame, made mainly of steel for strength and stiffness. It is designed to be practical and light enough to be genuinely portable; actual weight depends on model and configuration, but ranges from 10 – 12½ kg (21 – 28lbs).

Brompton weights are true weights; unlike most bike manufacturers, they include the weight of mudguards, pedals, etc. in our figures – if it’s on the bike, we weigh it.

The combination of a rigid frame and accurate alignment makes for efficient transmission of your energy and a lively, first-rate ride; countless owners use them on long journeys and for touring and many prefer the ride of a Brompton to that of conventional bikes.

Personal transport

Choosing your perfect brompton
There are four types of Brompton – the S, M and P types.

The S type has straight bars, and offers the sportiest ride position. The pay-off is less room for front luggage, but then, the S-Type was not conceived as a touring bike.

The M Type is an all-rounder and offers a more upright ride (height 1015mm) with excellent control , but a little heavier than the S Type (by 58g).

The P Type was designed for the touring cyclist – the positions (height 1033mm and 880mm) offer the rider variety; the lower angled grips present an aerodynamic profile, the upper grips provide upright control, ideal in traffic. The bars are 326g heavier than the S Type’s.

The H Type is the newest Brompton to be added to the team. Designed for the taller ride; the handle bar height is an extra 59mm higher then the M Type. Also the forwards tilt of the front stem has been changed to give the rider with a longer arm a more comfortable reach.

Rack
We advise against a rack because of the superior front luggage system offered by Brompton.

Gearing
There are four options and each of these can be lowered or raised to suit your riding style and terrain.

The combination of the highly-efficient Brompton Wide Range hub with the Brompton dérailleur system gives six evenly-spaced gears. Control with the two triggers is easy and, with its low transmission losses and wide range, this multi-gear system is the choice for touring and for riding in hilly areas. However, note the extra weight added by the six speed.

Frame
The Brompton standard frame is made from steel while the superlight option uses high-strength titanium alloy for the rear triangle, front fork, mudguard stays and folding peal bolt. It also uses an aluminium seat pillar, alloy head seat and a superlight front wheel.

We regret to announce that we are unable to order the Superlight frames until early spring 2012.

Colour
Will it be apple green and arctic blue? Yellow and orange? Or just classic raw lacquer?
By far your longest deliberation in choosing a Brompton will be over the colour choice. Use the interactive image above to experiment with your options for the main frame and the extremities.

Tyre
Three choices for 2011:

Brompton Kevlar (the standard, with reflective sidewalls), Schwalbe Marathon (slower but thicker than the Kevlar) and the now more puncture-resistant Schwalbe Kojak (the fastest there is).

Suspension
Two Options: Standard and Firm (suitable for those who weigh over 80kg and those who enjoy an aggressive ride).

Saddle Heights
Standard: Raises saddle up to 955mm from the ground. If your inside leg is more than 33″/84cm, you will probably need a longer seat pillar.

Extended: Offers an additional 60mm of elevation, though it does leave the saddle correspondingly higher when folded.

Telescopic: Offers up to 175mm more elevation than a standard pillar yet, when lowered, the saddle projects only 20mm above the folded bike.

Saddle
Two choices: Standard or Brooks B17 Special for Brompton. The Brooks saddle is in brown (the only Brooks 17 Special made in brown – as opposed to honey, green and black – is for Brompton) with black rails and provides a lifetime of comfort.

Lighting
Battery Lighting
The LED rear lamp with integral reflectors is designed especially for the Brompton and stays fixed on the bike. At the front is the S-Sun 3-LED lamp, easily removed for folding with a quick release.

Shimano HubDynamo
Hub dynamos offer a very reliable lighting solution. Features a Busch & Muller halogen front lamp and a stand light function at the rear.

SON Hub Dynamo
The Son hub is highly efficient and will gives years of service. It has a Busch & Muller LED front lamp, featuring an automatic light-sensing function and a stand light function at the front as well as the rear.

David Hembrow, maker of beautiful wicker baskets, including ones for the Brompton (available at our store), has moved to the Netherlands last year. He has sent this report, counterbalancing our adulatory obituary of Hans Mondemann: I feel the English speaking (and possibly other) countries have far more interest in these schemes than they should have. This, sadly, seems to be particularly true of cyclists in those countries, even though they have the most to lose. His schemes are not nearly as popular here, where people [...]
Congratulations to David Rosenberg, one of the first Londoners to be chosen for their 60 minutes of fame on top of Trafalgar Square’s fourth plinth. He will be riding a (stationary, I hope) pink Brompton, which will generate power to light his pink jacket. It is worth quoting him for the following: “I used to visit the National Gallery with my grandmother. And my uncle was badly injured in a traffic accident on the north side of the square. He survived, but he was in [...]
Stiletto and white skirt guard, from a gallery by the Salt Lake City Cycle Fashion Show. We like white and green. It has a freshness that spells mint and powder. We have a beautiful Brompton P6 in white and green with hub dynamo and Brooks saddle. We call it Edelweiss and it could be yours for £979.00. For all of you who are smart enough to spend Ferragosto in London, we will throw in a free set of Brooks bar tape, valued at £33.00, [offer [...]
